Abstract
Plants have infinite ability to synthesize arrays of chemical compound
newlineconstituting aliphatic as well as aromatic compounds. Most of the aromatic
newlinecompounds belong to the phenolics or their oxygen substituted derivatives.
newlineThese substances provide plant a defense mechanism against
newlinemicroorganisms, insects and herbivores. These compounds includes
newlineterpenoids imparting odour to the plants quinones and tannins forms the
newlinebasis of plant pigments. Many compounds provides plant flavor like the
newlineterpenoid capsaicin from chilli peppers. Some of the herbs and spices used
newlineby humans to season food yield useful medicinal compounds.
newlineThe use of traditional medicine is very common in South Eastern
newlineAsian countries like China, India, Japan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
newlineIn India herbal medicines make use of a large number of plants found
newlinelocally. Nowadays, the demand for herbal medicinal preparations is more
newlinethan mainstream pharmaceutical products.
newlineMarathwada possesses a very rich flora with a total of 1645 species
newlinebelonging to 746 genera of 155 families. Few plants from Marathwada have
newlinebeen studied for pharmaceutical properties. The majority of work pertains to
newlinethe taxonomy and physiology of plants found in this region. Few recent
newlinereports describe ethnomedicinal properties and uses of a wide number of
newlineplants. The work on the plants in this region related with antimicrobial and
newlinephytochemistry is very less.
newlineThe use of traditional medicine is a popular practice in Marathwada
newlineespecially in Nanded among rural folk due to several reasons, such as
newlineavailability of natural products, cultural beliefs, preference of natural
newlineproducts to synthetically derived drugs and the high cost of modern drugs.

newlineTraditional healers play key roles in administering treatment for all sorts of
newlineailments using plants.
newlineThe aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of selected
newlinemedicinal plants that are used in traditional medicine to treat common
newlineailments for their pharmacological and phytochemical properties.
