Abstract
Mobile Adhoc Networks (MANETs) are expected to provide certain levels of Quality
newlineof Service (QoS) under varying wireless channel capacity and noise constraints. These
newlinenoisy and varying channel conditions make it difficult to provide reliable and efficient
newlinereal-time communication in MANETs. The traditional approach of network security
newlinecan t be applied to MANETs owing to its unique characteristics and constraints such
newlineas topology instability and nodes mobility etc. With this view in mind decentralized
newlinegroup key management has been taken into consideration, wherein, three techniques
newlinehave been explored to achieve better utilization of Mobile Adhoc Networks under
newlinevarying channel conditions: Address allocation for MANET merge and partition,
newlineFault tolerance in topology, Group key Security issue.Addressing of nodes in MANET is of significant importance. In fact, the nodes need
newlineto be assigned conflict free IP addresses especially when two or more clusters merge.
newlineUnlike infrastructure based networks, MANET works on the concept of autonomous
newlineand spontaneous networking and therefore the nodes in MANET must do selforganization
newlineand self-configuration. A unique Election Algorithm has been proposed
newlinethat computes the weight of each node within the cluster and the node with highest
newlineweight is elected as cluster head. The results obtained thereof indicate that utilizing coordination among the nodes in
newlineMANETs leads to better throughput and energy efficiency for the network while
newlinemaintaining acceptable packet delay as imposed by the application, even in the
newlinepresence of relatively high channel error rates. A method of utilizing different channel
newlinecapacities has also been proposed that enables an individual network user to select the
newlineappropriate delay-throughput trade-off for multi-hop routing in MANETs.
