An Evaluation of Dental Ethics in an Orthodontic Practice A Survey Based Study

Abstract

The objective of this study was to assess the baseline knowledge, attitudes, and practices of orthodontists in India regarding bioethical principles in clinical practice. Specifically, it aimed to evaluate their awareness and understanding of ethical standards, their attitudes toward ethical decision-making—especially in fairness and patient justice— and their adherence to professional codes in everyday orthodontic care. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1,800 orthodontists practicing across India. Data were collected using a structured Knowledge–Attitude–Practice (KAP) questionnaire comprising 33 items, covering demographic details, ethical knowledge, professional attitudes, and clinical practices. The questionnaire underwent pre-testing for clarity and consistency. Responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics, with results expressed as frequencies and percentages.
