Abstract

Sustainable development using environment friendly materials is the newlineimportant need in the construction field. The major issues in the world are newlinepollution and global warming. It is because of the production of Ordinary newlinePortland Cement (OPC) for the preparation of concrete. The emission of CO2 in newlinethe atmosphere is the major threat of cement industry. But the usage of cement is newlinea prominent one in construction purpose and it cannot be avoided. The seeking newlineof the alternative material for OPC led to the new material called geo polymer. newlineThis material is a prominent one and is the best alternative for conventional newlineconcrete. The addition of fly ash, metakaolin, rice husk ash and slag envisaged newlinethe replacement of cement in concrete. At the same time the usage of industrial newlinewaste products has also reduced the greenhouse effect. newlineProtection of concrete structures from damaging is a major issue newlinein the field of civil engineering. Concrete structures are damaged due to any newlineserviceability aspects and environmental issues. The reasons for failure are due newlineto spalling of concrete, crack formation, deterioration, ageing of materials etc. newlineThese issues are to be addressed and the originality should be restored to avoid newlinefailures. Due to ageing the structures need to be repaired or strengthened. newlineStrengthening technique can be used for distressed structures also. Care should newlinebe taken that the total strengthening load should not be increased much newlinemore than the allowable load. The current codal provisions and strengthening newlinetechniques for reinforced concrete is used for GPC since it has many structural newlineapplications. Many techniques are used to restore and rehabilitate the originality newlineof existing structures.
