PRODUCTION OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUND FROM Streptomyces gobitricini ABK07 AND ITS APPLICATION ON URINARY CATHETER FOR BIOFILM PREVENTION

Abstract

Actinobacteriaare widely spread in the natural ecosystem and are of a great of interest in newlineresearch field as they are capable of producing bioactive secondary metabolites which can be newlinedeveloped into useful pharmaceutical products especially antibiotics. newlineBiofilm associated infections are difficult to treat due to the bacteria within the biofilm being newlineinsusceptible to antibiotic treatment. To contain infections, removal and replacement of the newlinecatheter is necessary accompanied with antibiotic treatment if required. Replacement of catheters newlinemay cause distress to patients, cause morbidity and increased medical costs. Long - term urinary newlinecatheters with an ability to completely resist biofilm formation for significant periods, have for newlinelong remained elusive. The development of antimicrobial urinary catheters has shown a newlinepromising success in clinical trials even though in short - term. newlineThe rise of catheter associated urinary tract infections has become a major health hazard. This newlinehas been compounded further by development of antimicrobial resistant pathogens. This could newlinebe as a result of biofilm formation on the catheters especially those used for long term in newlinepatients. It is for this reasons that we carry out this study; with an aim of isolating a potent newlineactinobacteria producing novel bioactive compounds. Our study also aims at investigating the newlinebiological activities of the isolate, characterization and partial purification of the antimicrobial newlinecompound. newline
