Effect Of Insulin Resistance On Adenosine Deaminase Activity And Its Correlation To Pancreatic and Liver Enzymes In Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

newline Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), chronic metabolic disorder and its prevalence newlineis raising globally. The micro and macrovascular complications in T2DM increases with newlineduration of disease and prevailing of chronic hyperglycemia. Chronic inflammation of pancreas newlinein type 2 diabetes leads to fibrosis and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Adenosine deaminase, newlinea key regulating enzyme of adenosine levels and concerned with cell mediated immunity. ADA newlinegives a promising result as a common marker for glycemic control, insulin resistance and newlinepathogenesis of disease. The present study was undertaken to evaluate association of insulin newlineresistance with adenosine deaminase levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus and their correlation newlinewith pancreatic and liver enzymes. newlineMaterials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study was conducted in Department of newlineBiochemistry, LN Medical College and JK Hospital, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. Relevant newlinehistory was taken, clinical examination and laboratory investigations was done in 800 subjects newlineincluding 400 type 2 diabetes mellitus subjects and 400 nondiabetic healthy controls. Under newlinefasting condition, 4 ml blood sample and 2 ml post-prandial blood was collected and serum newlinewas separated. The separated serum was used for the estimation of FBS, PPBS, insulin, newlinepancreatic enzymes, liver enzymes and Adenosine deaminase. 2 ml whole blood sample was newlineused for estimation of HbA1c. newlineResults: In this study, among 400 T2DM cases, 181 were males and 219 were females. Mean newlinelevels of fasting glucose, post prandial glucose, HbA1C, insulin, HOMA-IR, Liver enzymes newline(AST, ALT, ALP) and ADA were significantly higher in T2DM cases compared to nondiabetic newlinesubjects (P lt 0.001). Pancreatic enzymes, serum amylase and lipase were significantly lower newlinein T2DM cases compared to nondiabetic subjects (P lt 0.001). ADA showed positive newlinecorrelation with fasting Insulin, HOMA IR, liver enzymes and negative correlation with newlinepancreatic enzymes. Further, Serum ADA levels are significantly hi
