Abstract
Industry of the modern era is moving at a very fast pace and the new and
newlinedependable materials are always in high demand. To cope up with this need
newlineMetal matrix composites (MMCs) are playing a prominent role with applications
newlinein wide variety of materials. Aluminium (Al), the third most abundant material
newlineon earth is one of the promising metals used as matrix in MMCs. Various kinds
newlineof reinforcements are used along with Al to attain different set of properties.
newlineOne of these reinforcements are nano-sized carbon particles. In particular,
newlinecarbon nanostructures, e.g., graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are found as
newlineexcellent support reinforcement materials in Al-MMCs. The world has beheld
newlinean enormous amount of research in graphene since it was first reported in 2004.
newlineThis is because graphene has a unique two-dimensional carbon allotrope
newlinestructure and remarkable properties in terms of high mechanical strength and
newlineexcellent electrical as well as thermal conductivity and relatively large surface
newlinearea that makes graphene an all-around material having diverse applications
newlinefrom composite structures to electronic devices and much more. Moreover, to
newlinearchive, these properties, a very low amount of graphene is used in the parent
newlinematerial. There has always been an effort to fabricate high strength structures by
newlineusing graphene. In this thesis, an attempt has been made to fabricate and enhance
newlinethe mechanical performance of Al metal matrix nanocomposites by using
newlinegraphene nanoplatelets (GNP) as reinforcement. A detailed literature review has
newlinebeen done before selecting the processing technique and process parameters
