Impact of demonetization and cashless transaction on retail market in haryana

Abstract

This research explores the socio-economic impacts of the 2016 demonetization initiative in India, wherein the government invalidated the 500 and 1000 rupee banknotes. The policy aimed to curb black money, reduce counterfeit currency, and promote digital transactions as part of a broader push towards a cashless economy. Through a detailed analysis of various economic sectors including agriculture, industry, and services, this study evaluates the short-term disruptions and the longterm transformations induced by demonetization. Moreover, it assesses the growth in digital payments, supported by government initiatives like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS). The research utilizes both quantitative data and qualitative insights to understand the broader implications of this policy on economic activities, consumer behavior, and financial inclusion in India. The findings suggest that while demonetization presented significant challenges, such as economic slowdown and hardships for the unbanked populations, it also catalyzed a significant shift towards digital financial services, laying a foundation for a more transparent and inclusive financial system. newline
