Abstract
Organized retail in India is a recent phenomenon. Phenomenal growth of organised retail in the
newlinecountry can be characterised in terms of -geographical expansion and format expansion. Increasing
newlinenumber of outlets, growth of multiple formats, wider coverage of geographical areas were the three
newlinedimensions of recent growth strategy of the organized retailers in the country. Over the years, expansion
newlineof organized retailing has increased the competition for the resources among the retailers and has a
newlinenegative impact on cost and revenue of the retailers. Besides, it has shifted the work place of retailers
newlinefrom metros to tier II and tier III markets.
newlineMulti brand retail is in its nascent stage in Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha. Hence focusing on
newlineprofitability and growth has become imperative for multi brand outlets in the region. This study was
newlineconducted for identifying the factors influencing the profitable growth of Multi Brand retail outlets in the
newlineidentified cities of Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha. The study aimed to accomplish three broad objectives,
newlinenamely, 1) To study the recent trends of the retail industry in India; 2) To analyze the factors that
newlineaffect the competition among the organized retailers in Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha and 3) To
newlineidentify the factors that affect a retailer s profitability and their return on investment in
newlineChhattisgarh and Vidarbha.
newlineIn the light of above objectives a holistic approach had been adopted for designing profitable
newlinegrowth strategy. During the study profitability was evaluated from cost, revenue and environmental
newlinedimension. Three separate studies were conducted at the store, customer and environmental level. First
newlinestudy, examined the factors influencing productivity of retail resources keeping in view the profitability
newlineof multi-brand retail outlets in Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha region. Primary data on three major retail
newlineresources (Inventory, Space and Labor) were collected and compared for the above two region.
