Abstract

The thesis titled Working conditions, Job Satisfaction and Social Life of Civil Police Constables of Dakshina Kannada District, Karnataka: a sociological study , throws light on the life of the lowest ranking officers of the Police organization. In fact, they are the nerves of the police department and decide the police image in the society. They cannot afford to work in isolation, instead integrated with society as one of its essential limbs. Hence, they function effectively by enforcing laws and upholding happiness in different sections of the population. The nature of their work is that they are available for 24x7 in the police station. newlineLike any other employee, even the police constables come across several work related or social life problems. They also have certain responsibilities towards their family, wherein, they may not able to fulfil it due to improper working hours, too much workload, insufficient leave etc. However, inspite of knowing all these problems, still people join police job. What made them join? is the curiosity. Hence, the researcher having exposed to police department from very close felt that there is a need for the study about their problems in order to find out ways and means for them to swim through the problems. newlineThe universe of the study is Dakshina Kannada District of Karnataka State. The main objective is to find out the profile of the police constables, to examine their work life, job satisfaction, impact of social life on their work life and to suggest measures to improve the quality of work and social life of police constables. Only Civil Police constables who does the station duty, maintains law and order and help in Criminal Investigation are considered for the study. The data has been collected from both rural and urban police stations. Of the 32 police stations, 25 newline2 newlinepercent male and 100 percent female respondents have been chosen.
