newlineEven though biodiesel is universally accepted as a suitable alternate fuel for the
newlineCI engine, there has been limited study reported on its utilization for single cylinder
newlineCRDI (Common Rail Direct Injection) engine. Use of neat biodiesel in a CRDI engine
newlineeliminates consumption of diesel. In the present study, performance and combustion
newlinetests were carried out with the CRDI engine using neat Jatropha Methyl Ester (JME)
newlinewithout changing the engine configuration. This study was conducted on a CRDI
newlineconverted with cup shaped cavity in the piston crown adopted. Single cylinder engine
newlinewith CRDI system is used with neat JME as an alternate fuel with different injection
newlinedurations and different starts of injection to optimize the appropriate injection
newlineparameters mentioned above. This optimization is to elicit better combustion with
newlinebetter fuel economy, smoother engine running with lesser engine cylinder vibration
newlineand reduced emissions. As per the engine specifications, the start of injection is
newline23and#8304; Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) and two other timings have been tested one
newlinedegree before and after the specified start of injection. Same is the case with different
newlineinjection durations as selected by the electronic CRDI system in a fuzzy logy
newlineestimation to lift the load synchronizing with the Injection Pressure (IP) and fuel
newlineInjection Duration (ID).quot
