Abstract
ABSTRACT
newlineBackground
newlineWith an increase in aesthetic demands, the use of all ceramic materials for
newlinefixed prosthesis have become the new normal. There are few limitations like
newlinewear of the restoration, fractures of the ceramic veneer, colour stability with
newlineall ceramics when compared with the gold standard metal ceramic
newlinerestorations. With the advancements in CAD-CAM technology, various newer
newlinematerials like PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) are being introduced in the field of
newlinedentistry which can be used as alternatives to all ceramics.
newlineAim
newlineTo compare and evaluate the wear resistance, antagonist wear, colour
newlinestability and displacement resistance of zirconia layered with ceramic and
newlinePEEK layered with indirect composite fixed dental prosthesis.
newlineMaterial and Methods
newlineThe study evaluated the wear resistance, abrasiveness , colour stability and
newlinedisplacement resistance of the PEEK layered with indirect composite FDPs
newlineand Zirconia layered with indirect composite FDPs using a chewing simulator
newlinewith aging, a Digital Spectrophotometer and a universal testing machine
newlinerespectively. A independent sample t test was the statistical analysis
newlineperformed using IBM SPSS Version 20.

newlineResults
newlineZirconia layered with ceramic FDPs were shown to be two times more
newlineabrasive than PEEK layered with indirect composite FDPs (plt0.05).
newlineZirconia-ceramic FDPs had twice the wear resistance of PEEK-composite
newlineFDPs (plt0.05). There was no difference in the colour stability between the
newlinetwo groups (pgt0.05). PEEK-composite FDPs had more displacement
newlineresistance than Zirconia-ceramic FDPs (plt0.05).
newlineConclusion
newlinePEEK-indirect composite FDPs showed less wear resistance than
newlinezirconia-ceramic FDPs; however they protected the opposing dentition by
newlinecausing minimal wear of the antagonists. There is no significant difference in
newlinethe colour stability of PEEK-indirect composite FDPs and zirconia-ceramic
newlinefdps. PEEK-indirect composite fdps offer better stress modulation through
newlineplastic deformation that make it a promising alternative to Zirconia-ceramic
newlinerestorations.
