clinical study about identifying predictors of difficult thyroid surgery and assess them using thyroid difficulty score

Abstract

The Thyroid gland is a vital hormone gland which plays a newlinemajor role in the metabolism and development of human body. newlineThyroidectomy is considered as the safe surgery nowadays. newlineHowever, surgeons sometimes encounter unexpected difficulties newlinewhen performing thyroidectomy. The difficulty and duration of the newlinesurgery is affected by multiple factors. Certain conditions like newlinehyperthyroidism, large goitre and increased v ascularity can affect newlinethe duration of the surgery widely. Although the complications from newlinethyroid surgery are rarely fatal their consequences can be lifelong newlinewhich include injury to recurrent laryngeal nerve, damage to the newlineparathyroid and post operative hematoma. By assessing certain newlinepredictors these complications could be overcome. The aim of the newlinestudy is to identify predictors of difficult thyroidectomy using newlinecertain criteria which include size of the gland, vascularity, newlinemobility with deglutition, number of nodules, tracheal deviation, newlineretrosternal extension and thyroid assay. Using the values we newlinecalculate thyroid difficulty predictability score and assess this score newlinewith post operative factors such as post operative complication, newlineduration of hospitaliaztion and duration of surgery to validate the newlinescore. newline newline
