Abstract
Now-a-days, students are considered the central part of education system. This idea was
newlinepropagated by Rousseau. Modern education system demand childand#8223;s need, motivation, interest,
newlineattitude, aptitude and thinking skills. Being the age of child centric education the role of a teacher
newlineis not end rather increased a great. Without the concept of teacher, teaching - learning process is
newlinenot possible successfully. Teacher is the greater factor of entire education system and upon him
newlineteaching- learning process depends. Hence, the Kothari Commission (1964-66) aptly mentioned
newlinethat of all the different factors which influence the quality of education and its contribution to
newlinenation development, the quality, competence and character of teacher are undoubtedly the most
newlinesignificant .
newline Actually, it is very true that there is a significant relationship between teacherand#8223;s
newlinecompetencies and studentand#8223;s achievements. According to postlethwaite (2007) studentsand#8223;
newlineinstitutional achievement three variables are major viz., Teacher - related variables, Family or
newlineEnvironment - related variables, and School related variables. Among these three variables, the
newlineremarkable one is Teacher - related variables that greatly contribute to enhance studentsand#8223;
newlinelearning and institutional achievement (Panda and Mohanty, 2003). So we need well qualified,
newlinecompetent and effective teachers.
newline One of the prime goals of education is to enable the students to gain the thinking skills
newlineand strategies, which they will use, all through their lives, rather than storing information. By a
newlinegood education students should be able how to learn, remember, motivate and control their own
newlinelearning, so that they can teach how to learn. For this, meta-cognitive skills are quite important.
newlineThe concept of meta-cognition is very new in the field of education.
