Abstract
1.1 HISTORY OF MEDICINES
newlineFrom the beginning of human race, the humans were evolved as hunters. But with time the
newlinetransition was seen where hunters fast gathered themselves in a society and thus agricultural
newlinemethods were developed. These developments also lead to the requirement of medicines, and
newlinein process some healing treatments like wound healing and bone-setting processes were
newlinedeveloped. Many unwritten history are found like cave drawings, bony remains, surgical tools
newlinebut it is not sufficient to understand their mental attitude towards diseases and death. Bodies of
newlinehuman beings are found from the Stone Age which shows signs of medicinal treatment where
newlinebroken body limb have been healed and set, dislocation joints have been replaced and different
newlinebody wounds were healed successfully. Needles from bones were also found from Palaeolithic
newlineperiod (around 30,000 years ago) which can enlighten us that wounds were stitched (sutured).
newlineThe initial reference can be originated from Babylonian texts about the laws laid down by
newlineHammurabi during 1792-1750/43 BC, describing medical care and surgical procedures
newline[Sutcliffe, et al, 1992].
newlineIt can be easily understood that when humans started to build up the way of their thinking, they
newlineunderstood by the procedure of trial and error about the plants that may be medicinal plant, can
newlinebe taken as food, which are toxic in nature. The origin of domestic medicine or traditional
newlinemedicine, in the form of vegetables and herbs, initiated by the local healers in this process this
newlineis still persisting
newlineTwo kind of school can be found during the study of ancient school of medicines. One was
newline Dhanvantri Sampradaya and other one is Atreya Sampradaya . Sampradaya means tradition.
newlineThe former school was for physicians where Charaka Samhita was discussed and later one was
newlinefor surgeons where Sushruta Samhita was discussed. Charaka was one of the scholars who
newlinewrote Charaka Samhita. According to him there are three humors which help body to function.
newlineThese are bile, phlegm and air.
