Abstract

Magical realism is rooted in two opposing viewpoints, one grounded on a reason-based vision of the world and another route of embracing the supernatural as a part of everyday existence. (Zamora 76). It is a textual mode rather than a clearly defined genre. Angel Flores defines One might assume that it is a tale of fantasy but it is not but many researchers have pointed out that magic realism varies from fantasy. However, it is to be noted that the main characteristic feature of how magical realism varies from pure fantasy is that it is set in a typical, contemporary socio-culture setting with descriptions of real people and contemporaneous culture whereas pure fantasy is not. By challenging binary oppositions such as birth and death and which was before the colonial times and the past vs the post-industrial present, it confronts the conundrum of the union of opposites (Flores 15). newline
