Abstract
Groundwater has major role to play in water management. The river basin morphometry
newlinemay influence the occurrence of groundwater. Hence in the present study an effort is made to
newlinestudy the groundwater in relation with geomorphology of the area.
newlineThere are total seven chapters in the thesis. All the chapters bear relation with one
newlineanother. The chapters are as follows.
newlineChapter I is Introduction. It throws light on the background of the study, previous work
newlinedone and introduction of the study area. Widespread and continuous depletion of groundwater
newlinetable in many areas in Maharashtra has become a cause of major concern over the past ten years.
newlineThe developmental sequence for groundwater observed since the mid-1980 decade. It has been
newlineobserved that; most dug wells dry-up ever earlier in the dry (rabi) season. The transmissivity of
newlineDeccan trap is found to vary within wide limits depending on aquifer type.
newlineKolhapur district has high Gross domestic product, as well as enriched with Natural
newlineresources like Groundwater, Bauxite, Laterite ,building stone (Basalt) ,Clays etc. Panchaganga
newlineRiver covers most geographical part of district. It has five major Sub-tributaries as Kasari,
newlineKumbhi, Dhamni, Tulashi and Bhogavati. Here entire Kasari river basin is selected for study.
newlineKasari River originates near Gajapur Village (Taluka-Shauwadi) at Latitude 16° 39 51
newlineto16° 55 13 N and Longitude 73° 42 51 to 74° 42 51 E. It flows South East up to
newlineDhangarwadi Village for about 25 km and turn Eastwards and flow 50 km up to Prayag (Taluka-
newlineKarver) where it meets to Bhogavati river at Latitude 16and#730; 45 N and Longitude 74and#730; 11 E. Both
newlinerivers flow further as Panchganga River. Bajar Bhogaon, Kotoli, Varanage Padali, Karanjfen, Pat
newlinepanhala, Punal, Yelwanjugai, Goliwade, Majgaon are the major villages in KASARI river basin.
newlineThe study area falls in the survey of India toposheet number 47H/13, 47H/14, 47L1 and 47L/2 of
newlinethe scale 1:50000. Total basin area is about 631.7 square km. The study area includes lateritic
newlineplateau, hilly area, spurs, ridges, moderately sloping track, pediment region and alluvium.

newlineChapter II is of Methodology. The methods and procedures adopted to accomplish the
newlinework have been described in this chapter. Collection of data related to climate, rainfall, soils etc
newlineand related literature of the present area under study from different agencies and sources. Study
newlineof basin morphometry is carried out to establish different relationships between morphometric
newlineparameters and aspects. And further demarcate groundwater potential zones based on
newlinegeomorphological studies. Preparation of base map of the study area using toposheets and remote
newlinesensing and GIS techniques is done.
