Abstract
One of the most intriguing observations since times immemorial has been the human quest for self reliance and independence TIlls is largely determined by the degree of
newlinedevelopment that an individual attains However the attainment of development depends on
newlineintellectual and adaptive functioning and interaction with the environment which are reflected
newlinein the performance of daily tasks and in the manifestation of age appropriate behavior Human
newlinevariability with regard to this factor is tremendous and deficits in these are reflected as mental
newlineretardation That is mental retardation is a condition of lowered intellectual functioning coexisting
newlinewith deficits in adaptive behavior resulting in personal inadequacy and social
newlineinsufficiency emerging at birth or after and induced by intrinsic or extrinsic factors
