One of the most intriguing observations since times immemorial has been the human quest for self reliance and independence TIlls is largely determined by the degree of newlinedevelopment that an individual attains However the attainment of development depends on newlineintellectual and adaptive functioning and interaction with the environment which are reflected newlinein the performance of daily tasks and in the manifestation of age appropriate behavior Human newlinevariability with regard to this factor is tremendous and deficits in these are reflected as mental newlineretardation That is mental retardation is a condition of lowered intellectual functioning coexisting newlinewith deficits in adaptive behavior resulting in personal inadequacy and social newlineinsufficiency emerging at birth or after and induced by intrinsic or extrinsic factors
