Abstract
Coastal sediments are an excellent resource for many important minerals, they
newlinealso carry the history of the mineral s potential nature, environments, and
newlineoccurrences. The present study focuses on the distribution and concentration of heavy
newlineminerals in the coastal sediments between the Nagavali and Vamsadhara rivers in the
newlineSrikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, India.
newlineThe advancement of remote sensing and GIS plays a crucial role in many
newlinesectors. As the applications of remote sensing may have advanced in studying the
newlinerock bodies to identify minerals using their very spectral nature, there are still lesserknown studies concerning the beach placer minerals. The complex nature of beach
newlineplacers makes it hard to easily detect the potential minerals that exist in the sediment
newlinesamples, there are very few studies that focus on this area. Remote sensing and GIS
newlineplay a crucial role in analyzing and understanding these sediments. By using the tools
newlinefrom these we can gain valuable insights into the spatial distribution of heavy
newlineminerals and their potential occurrences.
newlineThe present study aims to:
newlineand#61623; Identify fraction-wise distribution and concentration of heavy minerals in the
newlinestudy area.
newlineand#61623; Correlation of lab-based mineral abundance spectra to total heavy mineral
newlinepercentages.
newlineand#61623; Generation of laboratory spectra for coastal placers, spectral library creation,
newlineand comparison of laboratory spectra with the existing USGS libraries.
newlineThe thesis is presented in six chapters. The first chapter gives general
newlineinformation about the coastal sediments, geology, geomorphology, land use, and
newlinedrainage network of the study area.
newlineThe second chapter incorporates the previous work and literature on coastal
newlinesediment studies, beach placers of world coasts, and the west and east coasts of India.
newlineThe third chapter deals with the details of sample collection, procedures
newlineregarding textural studies, heavy mineral studies and the results of textural data and
