Abstract
Noise pollution is recognized as a major cause of deteriorating quality of life in urban
newlinearea because of rapid growth and development in terms of industrialization, urbanization and
newlinecommercialization. The trend towards the use of more automated equipment s, high wattage
newlinestereo, large construction machinery, increasing number of vehicles, trains and aircrafts and
newlineother communication and transport systems has created a gradual acceptance of noise as
newlinenatural by-product of the developments. In developing countries like India, noise is becoming
newlinean increasingly omnipresent, yet unnoticed form of pollution even in developed countries.
newlineAutomobile revolution in urban centres has proved to be a big source of noise pollution.
newlineIncreasing traffic has given rise to traffic jams in congested areas of towns/ cities where the
newlinerepeated hooting of horns by impatient drivers pierces the ears of all road users. Heavy
newlinetrucks, buses trains, jet-planes, motor-cycles, scooters, mopeds, and jeeps etc have put
newlinetremendous pressure on residents in congested cities with regard to increasing noise level.
newlineNoise pollution is increasing as a result of increasing commercial and industrial
newlineactivities worldwide, population growth, expansion of highways and increasing number of
newlineautomobiles Noise is generally dependent mostly on the vehicles running conditions such as
newlinethe quality of the engine and exhaust system, traffic flow, interaction with road surface and
newlinetire and honking of horns. Other noise sources may be due to construction machine and
newlinepublic address systems. Industrial noise is a noise associated with industrial processes that
newlinemay cause hearing damage as a result of the high decibel level of noise, particularly among
newlineemployees who experience consistent and prolonged exposures to noise. Measures for
newlinecontrolling industrial noise are necessary in order to protect workers. Prolonged exposure to
newlineunpleasant noises or even a pleasant sound which is too loud can lead to hearing impairment,
newlinesevere mental disorientation and in s
