Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs), a subclass of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs), are a promising approach to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). These networks do not have a fixed structure and rely on their own nodes to provide their functionality. VANETs have characteristics dramatically different from MANETs due to their mobility restrictions, driver behaviour and high mobility of their nodes. The goal of VANET is to develop a vehicular communication system to enable quick and cost-efficient distribution of data for the benefit of safety, traffic efficiency and comfort of the driver. In this work, the Geographic Source Routing (GSR) was presented primarily to deal with several challenges that were to be handled in a city environment. The GSR will employ another new method called the switch back to greedy used for local recovery. As soon as the packet reaches the local maximum, it will switch back to its greedy forwarding. The Road-Based using Vehicular Traffic Routing (RBVT-R) protocol with Geographical forwarding permits the node to use the road segment to transfer packets among different consecutive intersections found in a path. The Glow-worm Swarm Optimization(GSO) algorithm was inspired by the glow-worm s biological behaviour to optimize RBVT-R. Results show that the proposed GSO-RBVT-R achieves better performance than GSR and RBVT-R, respectively. newline
