Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha and the late 19th early 20th century Punjab a historical perspective on his writings

Abstract

The present research work is a historical analysis of Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha s works of late 19th and early 20th century Punjab. Bhai Kahn Singh was a well known scholar who wrote around two dozen works including some poems and essays. The Colonial time frame was a period of transformation, visible in all spheres of society. The socio-religious reform movements of that time were redefining and restructuring their beliefs and practices. In this atmosphere of communal consciousness, Bhai Kahn Singh s works reflect the emerging social reality. His works include aspects of society, religion, administration and governance and identity. He highlighted the social issues and concerns of his times; clarified aspect of Sikh religion and practice and reiterated the distinct identity of the Sikhs. He also presents a model of an ideal ruler, minister and responsibility of administrators and other government servents. newline
