newlineBy historically analyzing select printed materials such as books, journals, and
newlinenewspapers, this thesis attempts to contextualize Urdu print culture in the princely state of
newlineHyderabad. Thematically it examines books on science, journal essays on social reform, and
newlinenewspaper editorials on infrastructure and development. The thesis argues that print
newlinefunctioned in Hyderabad less as a disseminator of modern knowledge and social agent and
newlinemore as a condition of discursive configurations. Print culture helped accelerate the mutual
newlineconstitution of tradition and modernity and religion and science through intersection and
newlinedivergence. The methodology chosen for this study is archival techniques coupled with the
newlinehistorical method and textual analysis.
