Abstract
Indian power grid with installed capacity of more than 360 GW is one of the world s most rapidly growing, synchronized national grid serving more than one billion population. The comprehensive smart grid vision and road map for
newlineIndia has been aligned to Government of India s all-encompassing objective of
newline Access, Availability and Affordability of Power for All . As the country moves
newlinetowards greening the smart Indian grid, energy reliability and grid resiliency
newlineare the key concerns for the power industry. Several major blackouts in the
newlinelast decade have brought utilities to focus on development of synchrophasor
newlinebased Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) systems.
newlineThe synchrophasor-based protection and control applications are still being
newlineresearched upon pending comprehensive practical implementation.Lack of
newlinepractical smart grid applications to ensure a high degree of reliability, selfconfiguration
newlineand self-healing in Indian power system outweighs the tremendous
newlineadvancement in envisaged technologies. A research on the various aspects
newlinewhich makes our grid susceptible to cascading catastrophes, provides insight for
newlineadequately addressing both industry and stakeholder interests and concerns. It
newlinealso helps in finalizing on solutions for designing adaptive system protection
newlineschemes for a resilient, reliable, green, smart grid.
newlineThe two important aspects of grid operation are maintaining voltage profiles
newlinewithin acceptable limits and ensuring synchronous operation of grid. A transient
newlineinstability always jeopardizes these two stability categories. Therefore, the dissertation deals with power system stability assessment in purview of short-term
newlinelarge disturbance voltage stability and transient angular instability. In this dissertation,grid monitoring and protection applications are developed using phase
newlineangle separation measurement by strategically placed Phasor Measurement Units
