Abstract

A number of Rituparno Ghosh s films have addressed the social position of women and voiced their struggle. Scholars have made numerous attempts to portray Ghosh as a Feminist filmmaker; hence a large number of his female characters have been analyzed to critique the gender oppression of women in the patriarchal society. But the male characters in his films are assumed to be unproblematic, and hardly any research on Ghosh has addressed them in discussing the gender inequality in society. One cannot address social inequality and gender oppression in a patriarchal world without understanding the dynamics of gender relations and practices prevalent in society. Masculinity Studies, being a logical extension of Feminist theory, tries to address these inequalities by analyzing the discursive practices in society. Thus, my thesis constitutes in analyzing Ghosh s film adaptations Antarmahal, Cand#333;khand#275;r Band#257;li, Satyand#257;nband#275;and#7779;and#299;, Dahan, Raincoat and Citrand#257;and#7749;gadand#257; along with their source texts to understand the dynamic system of practices 1 that directly link the gendered practices prevalent in society. newline
