Abstract
Increase in life of a component can be done either by alloying with
newlinevarious suitable materials before its manufacturing or by suitable coating on it
newlineafter manufacturing Application of coatings on tools and machine elements is
newlinean efficient way of improving their frictional and wear resistance properties
newlineHigh carbon high chromium steel AISI D2 has properties like high
newlineHardness wear resistance dimensional stability etc In particular AISI D2
newlinesteel possesses high wear resistance good resilience high toughness and
newlinegood hardenability It is hence employed in the production of tools with
newlinecomplex shape and close dimensional tolerances But the major drawback of
newlineusing this is its higher coefficient of friction during metal to metal contact
newlineThis research work aims to reduce the coefficient of friction wear volume
newlineand to avoid metal to metal contact by providing a conventional coating such
newlineas manganese phosphate coating in order to improve the wear resistance of
newlinetool materials
newlineThe manganese phosphate coating is applied on high carbon
newlinehigh chromium steel substrate by immersion method The solution consists of
newlinephosphoric acid Manganese phosphate salt and accelerator
