Studies on Multi Quantum Well Avalanche Transit Time Sources for Different Industrial Applications in Millimetre Wave and Terahertz Frequency Regimes

Abstract

The importance of mm-wave and THz sources, particularly in industrial applications ranging from non-destructive testing to remote sensing, medical imaging, and high-resolution spectroscopy. These applications demand sources that are not only powerful and efficient but also compact and capable of operating at or near room temperature. The thesis underscores the limitations of conventional sources and emphasizes the potential of MQW IMPATT diodes, especially those based on wide bandgap (WBG) materials like SiC and GaN, in overcoming these challenges. The thesis provides a comprehensive study of MQW IMPATT devices, demonstrating their superior performance in both mm-wave and THz frequency regimes. The research findings have significant implications for the development of next-generation solid-state sources, offering promising solutions for a wide range of industrial and scientific applications.
