Color based classification of food grain varieties using artificial neural networks

Abstract

Food grains and specifically rice is the staple of food of a majority of Indians. The newlineprocessing of rice at the final stage of packing is one of the most challenging tasks. Mills newlinefind it extremely difficult to manually classify one variety of rice from another. It is not newlinepossible to manually sort out food grains and classify them based on their color. The newlinedecision making abilities of grain inspector can be affected by physical condition such as newlinemental state caused by work pressure and biases, eyesight and fatigue, and working newlineconditions such as climate, improper lighting, etc (Visen et al, 2004). So, most of the newlinefarmers are continuously affected by manual activity. Sorting and classification of food newlinegrains varieties are the common problem in the mills and food processing industries. newlineColor contains some important information about the food grains varieties. Nowadays, newlinefood grains varieties are classified by manual process which means conventional newlinemethods. Mills and food processing industries are facing lot of challenges in sorting out newlinethe rice based on the colors because the conventional methods may cause errors due to newlinethe mistakes of human being. So, there is a strong need for developing automatic, faster newlineand precise system for sorting out based on color. This reason makes researcher to find newlineout the solution to these problem. The decision making process in sorting out the food newlinegrains is most important but in most cases human decision making process in food grains newlinesorting failed and this is because of unawareness, loss of concentration, and so on. This newlineaffects the quality of sorting the rice and so it provides difficulty to rice mills and food newlineprocessing industries. These types of problems not only affect rice mills and food newlineprocessing industries but also farmers. So, it is considered as one of the serious problems newlinein the agriculture industries. Existing studies fail to develop and implement the color newlinebased rice sorting system, which helps rice mills and food processing industries to sort newlineou
