Abstract
The current study titled Women Attempters of Self-Incineration: Motives, Intrapersonal
newlineExperiences, and Perceived Factors for Thriving has three objectives. First, to explore the
newlinesituational antecedents to self-incineration among women. Second, to explore the intrapersonal
newlineexperiences among women after self-incineration across eleven aspects. These are motives for
newlinethe self-incineration attempt; interaction with parents, siblings, husband, neighbours after the
newlineself-incineration attempt; engagement in household chores and social engagement after the
newlineself-incineration attempt; occupation related experiences after the self-incineration attempt; the
newlinelived experience of anger with respect to self-incineration; sources of strength; and personal
newlineaspirations after the self-incineration attempt. Third, to explore the perceived factors for
newlinethriving among women attempters of self-incineration. The study was based on female
newlineattempters of self-incineration, who were admitted and discharged from hospitals in Bangalore.
newlineThe study employed qualitative research methods exclusively for all the three parts of the study.
newlineFor the first part, data for exploring situational antecedents to self-incineration were obtained
newlinefrom the 328 cases that a social worker associated with burns ward at a hospital had
newlinedocumented and were analysed using thematic analysis. This resulted in ten themes of
newlinesituational antecedents. For the second part, data were collected using semi-structured
newlineinterviews with 8 women attempters of self-incineration, and the data were subjected to
newlineinterpretative phenomenological analysis, which resulted in super-ordinate and sub-ordinate
newline
newlinethemes for all eleven aspects explored. For the third objective, data were collected using semi-
newlinestructured from 5 thrivers among women attempters of self-incineration, and the data were
newline
newlinesubjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis, which resulted in eleven super-ordinate
newlinethemes of perceived factors for thriving. The results are analysed and discussed. The limitations
newlineand implications of the finding are discussed.
