Abstract
Fast pace solar photovoltaic additions, towards energy security and slowdown of carbon emissions, still have lot of unattended concerns. One such concern is the electromagnetic pollution that are far stronger than natural causes of electromagnetic fields. The electromagnetic pollution by a solar plant due to high frequency operation of power electronic switches in the control system use the photovoltaic cells as an antenna to emit the electromagnetic radiation. This emission not only leads to interference with other electrical and communication systems but also with living organisms. This effect will be much more adverse in megawatt scale solar power plants due to vast area of photovoltaic cells in the order of several acres. The photovoltaic (PV) panel area of one megawatt plant works out roughly about 6,000 square meters and with such a wide antenna area this plant will definitely emit a strong electromagnetic radiation causing deration of system, interference with other electrical and communication networks and other ecological systems.
