Abstract
This study attempts an analysis of freedom struggles in Afro-Asian nations
newlinefrom the lens of leadership. For a detailed analysis of the theme the role of
newlineGandhi in India and Mandela in South Africa is examined in depth. The
newlinestudy attempts a wider analysis of the nature and trajectory of freedom
newlinestruggles and focuses on the role of leadership. In India, the role played by
newlineGandhi and the different perspectives and narratives of the movement and
newlinehis leadership are discussed in the study. Freedom struggles form an
newlineintrinsic part of the history of the colonized world and this is assessed in
newlinedetail. Freedom Struggles produced leaders like Kwame Nkrumah of
newlineGhana, Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, Patrice
newlineLumumba of Congo, Nnamdi Azikiwe of Nigeria, Robert Mugabe of
newlineZimbabwe. Beyond these leaders who were mostly influenced and impacted
newlineby Pan-Africanism and strong sense of African Nationalism, the Afro- Asian
newlinecommunity gave to the word two outstanding crusaders of freedom, peace
newlineand equality- Gandhi and Mandela. Leaders who impact are analyzed and
newlinestudied. The study also attempts a comparative analysis of the role of the
newlinetwo leaders and the context in which they led their movements. The
newlinedifferences and similarities in their approach are also assessed.
