Design and implementation of intelligent systems for biomedical image analysis

Abstract

Biomedical imaging is an inevitable part of modern healthcare and diagnostic systems. Biomedical images are helpful to reveal various internal information about a body part and it is highly preferable because of the non-invasive nature of most imaging technologies. A correct and quick analysis of the biomedical images is essential for designing an effective treatment plan. Appropriate interpretation of biomedical images is extremely essential to understand the disease and to get an insight into the present condition of a patient. It is the fundamental reason behind the significant dependency of doctors and domain experts on various modalities (briefly discussed in Chapter 1) of biomedical imaging. newlineBiomedical image analysis is considered a challenging task and the scope of tolerating inaccuracies in the interpretation is almost none because inaccurate interpretation can lead to the wrong diagnosis. Hence, incorrect treatment will be provided to the patients that may cause severe effects on the patient s health, and sometimes, it can be deadly. Sometimes, interpreting different regions of biomedical images is a difficult job due to the presence of poor correlation, blurred boundaries, presence of noise, presence of external artifacts, limitation of the image acquisition devices, poor contrast, etc. Manual investigation of these images is performed by physicians or other domain experts. newline
