Abstract
The Thousand Faces of Night (1992) is Githa Hariharan`s maiden novel for
newlinewhich she was awarded the Commonwealth Writers` Prize and with this award she
newlinehas marked her indelible presence in the realm of Indian English Fiction. She while
newlineportraying the lives of three different generations of Indian women dextrously
newlineinterweaves the stories of these women with the stories of some of the prominent
newlinewomen of Indian mythology, re-structuring and re-shaping ancient mythical stories,
newlineprojecting them in contemporary perspective. She pours out her heart for those poor
newlinewomen who are still struggling to come to terms with their own destiny by
newlinedemanding a life of equality and liberty in a male dominated society.
