Influence of Provenances Seed Forms Storage Conditions and Packaging Materials on Seed Longevity in Groundnut

Abstract

The investigation was undertaken to know the influence of provenances, seed forms, newlinestorage conditions and packaging materials on seed longevity in groundnut. The results were newlineanalysed in CRD with factorial concept. The seed materials were produced at different newlinelocations viz., Dharwad, Bagalkot and Kumta during summer season of 2015-16 and stored newlineduring 2016-17 in their respective places under ambient condition and cold storage condition newlineat cold storage unit Dharwad in HDPE bag, polylined gunny bag and vacuum packing in the newlineform of pod and kernel for 12 months. Seed materials were collected bimonthly from newlinerespective places to assess the seed quality parameters in laboratory of Department of Seed newlineScience and Technology and National Seed Project, University of Agricultural Sciences, newlineDharwad. newlineThe results revealed that the seeds produced in Bagalkot (L1) and stored as pod in newlinevacuum packing under ambient and cold condition recorded significantly higher seed newlinegermination (68.00 and 69.75 %), seedling length (18.36 and 18.20 cm), seedling vigour newlineindex (1248 and 1270), seedling dry weight (231 and 245 mg), mobilization efficiency (6.21 newlineand 6.53 %), oil content (47.59 and 47.88 %) and protein content (31.06 and 31.19 %), newlinerespectively at the end of 12 months of storage compared to other locations, seed forms and newlinepackaging material. newlineOther seed quality parameters like electrical conductivity (0.929 and 0.776 dS/m), newlinelipase activity (0.54 and 0.53 and#956; moles min-1), protease activity (0.262 and 0.245 U/ml), newlinemoisture content (7.05 and 7.31 %) were significantly lower throughout the storage period in newlinethe pods produced in Bagalkot and stored in vacuum packing under both ambient and cold newlinecondition respectively, compared to other treatments. Bagalkot is suitable for both production newlineand storage of summer groundnut and the seeds stored in vacuum packing showed better newlinestorability under both storage conditions. newline
