Investigations on spark plasma processing behavior and machining characteristics of titanium carbide reinforced alumina ceramic composite in WEDM

Abstract

The recent advancements in the material science realm act as an impetus for the development of novel engineering materials such as composites, shape memory alloys, ceramics, smart materials, and biomaterials. Machining of advanced materials is very challenging and tedious to attain the desired shape. Amongst these materials, composite newlinematerials are very hard and involve a lot of effort for machining processes. In many cases, the machining of composite materials through the traditional machining route exhibits inaccurate dimensions and poor surface finish. newlineHence, there is a need for non-traditional or advanced machining processes to overcome the setbacks encountered in traditional machining techniques. Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM) process can cut intricate shapes and complicated geometries with the utmost surface finish. It newlineis the commonly preferred machining process for processing exotic, electrically conductive, high strength, and temperature resistant materials, especially for producing complex profiles. newline newline
