The Shift in Consciousness of Women in the Select Plays of Dina Mehta Poile Sengupta and Manjula Padmanabhan

Abstract

Indian women occupy a curious position, deified on the one hand as Goddesses and degraded on the other hand as objects. This ambivalent positioning of women, combined with the patriarchal domination and societal norms, works to their disadvantage, requiring emancipation. At this juncture, a shift in the consciousness of women is needed, to uplift the women from an abysmally low status to the level of equality with men, if not totally to the high state of superiority.
