ABSTRACT newlineBackground and Objectives newlineOrgan failure worsens outcome in sepsis. The Sequential newlineOrgan Failure Assessment (SOFA) score numerically quantifies the newlinenumber and severity of failed organs. We examined the utility of the newlineSOFA score and its derivatives for assessing outcome of patients newlinewith surgical sepsis. We also evaluated whether serial assays of newlineserum lactate were directly proportional to the SOFA scores and newlineevents and outcomes. newlineDesign newlineProspective non-interventional observational study in a n newlineurban tertiary care centre newlineMethod newline60 patients admitted to the surgical intensive care unit newline(SICU), minimum duration of stay 48 hours, with suspected newlineinfection, satisfying two or more criteria of systemic inflammation, newlinewere followed up till mortality, discharge or 7 days whichever was newlineearlier. The SOFA on Day 0,SOFA on day 5 and SOFA on day 7, newlinemaximum SOFA and the mean SOFA were calculated. These were newlinecompared with the outcome.
