Assimilation And Beyond A Postcolonial Reading Of Rohinton Mistry s Works

Abstract

Rohinton Mistry is an expatriate Indian-Parsi writer living in Canada. As a Parsi and then as an immigrant in Canada, he sees himself as a symbol of double displacement. The present study explores how the Parsis subtly assimilated into the fabric of Indian culture, maintaining their separateness and yet merging together in India s diversity always having been hybrid with Hinduism and the British but also becoming more hybrid after migration and how they are othered . newlineThe present study makes an attempt in analysing all the works (Such a Long Journey, A Fine Balance and Family Matters and Tales of Firozesha Baag) and the different themes dealt with such as history, war, politics, society, religion, human relationship, culture and beliefs in the light of postcolonial theory such as hybridity, otherness and Third Space and how well the Parsis have assimilated themselves in India and moved beyond. The first chapter gives an introduction to Parsi community, its religion, culture and ethnic beliefs. newline newline
