Abstract
Solar energy is rapidly gaining prominence as an important renewable energy
newlineresource. However, only a minuscule portion of the available solar energy is
newlineharnessed by the technology till date. Using Conventional Si based photovoltaic
newlinemodules results a mere conversion of solar energy into electricity is 15%. The factors
newlineof conversion can be increased up to 40% by using higher efficiency solar cells under
newlinehigh concentration. The new capacity installation decisions today are becoming more
newlinecomplicated in many parts of the world because of difficulty in finding sites for new
newlinegeneration and transmission facilities. Hence, a research is to be carried out to design
newlineand develop various solar plants with MPPT based controller for a PV array with a
newlinelow cost and battery less electric drive. The system is connected to an asynchronous
newlinemotor drive where, power is fed to DC-DC boost converter and an inverter from
newlinephotovoltaic panels.
newline
newlineThere are advantages with the use of batteries that are used for maintaining the
newlineefficiency of power conversion chain from the PV panel to the asynchronous motor
newlinedrive. Solar energy is the best option for electricity generation, as it is available
newlineeverywhere, free and harmless. On an average the sunshine in India is about 6 hrs in a
newlineday and annually the sun shine is about 9 months in a year. Electricity from the sun
newlinecan be generated through the solar photovoltaic modules (SPV). The SPV comes in
newlinevarious power output to meet the load requirement. The photovoltaic (PV) is even
newlinemore modular than the wind. It allows installations in stages as needed without losing
newlinethe economy. It can be sized to any capacity, as the solar arrays are priced directly by
newlinethe peak generating capacity in watts and indirectly by square foot. For small grids,
newlinethe modularity of the PV and wind systems is having more importance
newlineLocal renewable power plants can also benefit small power systems by moving
newlinegeneration near the load, thereby reducing voltage drop at the end of a long
newlineoverloaded line.
