Abstract
The dissertation entitled A portrayal of Post-human Society in the Select
newlineScience Fiction of William Gibson is an attempt to study the post-human society in
newlinethe select science fiction of William Gibson. Post-human studies has emerged as a
newlinedominant school of thought in the second decade of the 21st century. The traditional
newlineoutlook towards defining the human is no more sufficient, since it merges with
newlineadvanced technologies exponentially. The merger of (post)human and non-human has
newlinechanged capabilities of the (post)human in many folds. Can this new being be defined
newlinefrom the traditional liberal humanist s point of view? Moreover, post humanism also
newlineconsiders the Eco-centric points of view by reckoning (post)human as inseparable from
newlinethe other species, environment and technologies. It rejects the Speciesism,
newlineAnthropocentrism, and dualistic formation of human . Hayles defines the term posthuman
newlinebased on distributed cognition and Francesca Ferrando defined the term in
newlineher series of video lectures The Post-human based on Post-dualism, Post-humanism,
newlineand Post-anthropocentrism. Both of the thinkers give stress on the non-separation of
newlinethe human from the technology. Distributed cognition demonstrates that human
newlinecognition is distributed among the human and non-human entity. Fernando, defines
newlinethe post-human with stress on the non-separation of the human from the technology
newlineand the environment. It is proper to call it as a contemporary discourse that is
newlinehappening in the first quarter of the 21st century.
newlineIn the Anthropocene era, post-human is very vital for understanding the
newlinepresent geological era of the 21st century, in which (post)humans have maximum
newlineimpact on the ecology, especially its destruction such as, mass extinction of the
newlineanimals, deforestation, space debris, etc.
newlineFor the study of the post-human society in the science fiction works of
newlineWilliam Gibson, some of them have been taken for the study: Neuromancer(1984),
newlineii
newlineCount Zero (1986), Mona Lisa Overdrive(1989), Idoru, (1996) and All Tomorrows
