A Study To Assess The Effectiveness Of Music Therapy On The Selected Physiological And Behavioral Parameters Among The Premature Babies Admitted In Selected Neonatal Intensive Care Units Of Sangli City

Abstract

INTRODUCTION-A number of studies documented the Effect of the NICU Environment on the response of stress in Preterm Infants. Excessive stimulation, noise, light, and handling lead to increased stress responses whichlead to disturbances in sleep, fluctuations to vital parameters. Purpose of the study was to assess the effect of music on selected physiological and behavioral parameters in preterm babies. METHOD- Quantitative research approach with quasi experimental design was used for the study. 100 preterm babies were selected by using purposive sampling technique. Classical music (flute) was played one time in a day with the use of headphones at 60-70db level for 50 babies belonging to experimental group. Music introduced for ten minutes on alternate day for 2 weeks .During study physiological parameters such as heart rate, respiratory rate, Oxygen saturation,Oral intake, mode of intake, vomiting and abdominal distension was observed, as behavioral parameter Sleep state was observed with the use of Brazelton scale during the intervention as soon as the music starts. newlineRESULT Significant reduction in heart rate, respiratory rate and increase in oxygen saturation was observed in experimental group. Heart rate and respiratory rate were159.1±9.95,54.6±6.824 on 1st day where as on 6th day they reduces to 117±4.56,31.5±3.424 on 6th day respectively .Overall 10 ml increase in oral intake along with early transition from tube feeding to oral feeding was observed in babies from experimental group. with respect to weight there was no significant change observed. Vomiting and abdominal distension did not occur in babies from experimental and control group. In Behavioural parameter sleep state is reduced from rating active alert to Deep sleep state .rating 4 is for active alert and 1 is for deep sleep (4.64±0.485 to1.24±0.476) newlineConclusion: Classical music has shown positive effect on selected physiological and behavioral parameters among premature babies. newline
