Abstract
Imagination is a mental process in which, on the basis of past experiences any composition is reproduced or a new composition is created. The imaginative power of an artist fills his heart with Rasa and thus he presents his attitude, desires and feelings through the medium of swara (musical notes) in which his creative power is attained to perfection. In Hindustani Classical Music while playing various well known tantri instruments through kon, an artist through his imagination uses his prior experiences to form a Raag that corresponds to a specific method of Raag and hence creates a new form. In this Research work, I have taken Rudraveena, Vichitraveena, Surbahar, Sitar, Sarod and Hawaian Guitar as tantri instruments. The thesis highlights the role of imagination and creation while playing tantri instruments and practically illustrates the various stages of rendition of raag in the form of Aalap, Jodalaap, Jodjhaala, Gat Vadan, Taan-Toda and Jhala. This is the main thrust of my thesis.
