Abstract

quotHybrid upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (HUASB) is a new entrant to the family of high-rate anaerobic reactors. It is basically a combination of the UASB and the anaerobic filter. The bottom portion of the reactor operates as a UASB which contains flocculent along with granular sludge, whereas the upper part is a fixed film reactor filled with some inert media. In this study, four anaerobic reactors (working vol 3.5 l) i.e. three HUASB reactors with different novel inert media viz. coconut fiber (R1), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel beads (R2) and seashells (R3), and a conventional UASB (R4) were simultaneously investigated in continuous mode at mesophilic ambient temperature. newlinequot newline newline
