Activity Based Teaching A Pedagogical Approach in Teaching English for Tertiary Level Students

Abstract

English is regarded as a global language, and its relevance in professional newlinedevelopment is unavoidable for all graduates. Currently, the majority of graduates newlinefrom various universities in our country are unable to fulfil the demands of the job newlinemarket as they lack language skills, communication skills, confidence, soft skills, and newlinework transition. As a result, graduates must be educated in these skills in order to newlinebridge the gap between their university education and professional needs. newlineEnglish language classes are typically taught in a teacher-centred manner, using a newlinelecture method to teach language skills. Students in these classes are passive listeners newlinewho rote learn the subjects and the same will be addressed in their exams. Assuming newlinethat the language requirements are the same for different streams of tertiary level, the newlineapproach and make students active participants in English language classroom, with newlinethe instructor acting as a guide. Along with English language skills they are exposed newlineto different skills needed for their career through activity-based teaching. The newlineresearcher created 45 modules for tertiary students with various activities focusing on newlinethe language skills required for their professional needs. The modules were taught newlinethrough activity-based teaching through both traditional and Computer-Assisted newlineLanguage Learning methods. English language lessons at the tertiary level will assist newlinestudents in improving their overall professional skills. newline
