Vidhan Sabha Elections in Punjab A Comparative Study of 2012 and 2017

Abstract

newlineDemocracy is not simply a system of government, but also a kind of social structure. It is a way of life. A type of governance in which citizens directly exercise power or elect representatives from among themselves to create a governing body, such as a parliament. The literary meaning of the word democracy is quotgovernment of the people, quot a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them or by their elected representatives under a free voting process. Parliamentary democracy is the most popular form of government today. India adopted the parliamentary form of government and based its constitution on the British model because India had remained under the domination of the British and British traditions. The parliamentary form of government also suits India, because of its big size, multilingual and multicultural character of the country. The other reason to adopt the parliamentary form of government is that parliamentary democracy is the best instrument for ascertaining and expressing the will of the people.
