Waste from various sources is one of the major factors which creates predicament in environment and its sustainability. The disposal of fish visceral waste, in this regard is currently posing a major threat to fishery industries and environment. 35% of the total global catch and 27% of the landed fish is wasted (FAO, 2018). The inappropriate disposal of fish waste pollutes ground water and soil (by nitrate leaching), surface water (by eutrophication) and harbors insect/rodent infestations due to release of noxious odor such as indole, sketol, cadavarine, putricine etc. Usingbiotechnological approaches, high-valued product- enzymes can also be obtained which eventually would lead to valorization of visceral waste in a cost-effective manner. Present investigation involved isolation of trypsin from viscera (liver and intestine) of Labeorohitaand Catlacatla. The enzyme was purified, characterized and its efficacy as trypsinising agent in animal cell culture was determined. These fishes chosen are widely consumed freshwater fishes. Together their stock amounts around 30-35 % in three-species culture system. The enzyme studied was expected to act as a potent cell-dissociating agent comparable to commercial (bovine) trypsin. As conventional trypsinisation relies upon costly enzyme, it was anticipated to reduce the load over commercial trypsin and minimize the waste burden in an eco-friendly manner. newline
