Abstract
Introduction to any thesis presents a mirror to the contents to follow in the thesis. One of the major objectives of the present research is to examine how society, culture, and social policies around us negotiate with these differences and to explore gaps between policy conceptualization and felt needs of specially challenged people. A key question that text of this thesis examines is of gender specific challenges experienced by the co-research participants and narrated by their care provider for those not able to communicate directly. Some important markers that came to the fore in the present research are also identified in various studies reviewed in this chapter. For a research to be truly representative of the research population/universe of study, it is important to generate empirical data from all sections of the society. The first and foremost as mandated in the objectives is to explore any gender-specific challenges in the experiences of livelihood of persons with disability.
