Abstract
In the highly competitive knowledge based economy, the higher education is a critical factor to develop India economically, politically and socially stronger. Higher education plays a momentous role in improving the quality of human life. In the post independence period, the number of higher education institutions has increased enormously. Higher education has faced lot of challenges and issues to provide quality education in the recent years. It creates an urge for the faculty members to be competent enough in teaching. So, the faculty members are expected to have the competencies at various levels of knowledge, skills, attitude and behaviour to address the demand of all the stakeholders in educational institutions. To study the faculty competencies for effective teaching learning process, the researcher has collected the data from faculty members of Arts and Science Colleges and Engineering Colleges in three districts Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur respectively. Survey method was adopted to collect the data from the respondents. 863 respondents were chosen for the study from these three districts. Stratified random sampling technique was applied in order to obtain a representative sample. To explore the basic concepts and literature on faculty competencies and teaching learning process in higher education institutions, the researcher has done an in-depth reference ofsecondary sources which are already available in various sources. The secondary data have been drawn from different sources like newspapers,magazines, journals, books, websites and pamphlets. From the descriptive statistics, it was found that majority of the respondents in the higher education institutions have sound knowledge, well prepared and full authority on the subject they teach. They have the interest to teach the concepts with current happenings and real life examples
