Abstract
newline Exponential growth in wireless networks has resulted in huge demand
newlinefor the radio spectrum resources. However, studies on spectrum show that
newlinesignificant portions of spectrum resource are highly underutilized. The survey
newlineof spectrum usage by FCC [Federal Communications Commission] indicates
newlinethat spectrum utilization ranges from 15% to 85% under fixed spectrum
newlineallocation policy. The spectrum utilization is mainly around certain parts of
newlinethe spectrum whereas a considerable amount of the spectrum is unutilized.
newlineTo use the spectrum more efficiently, the Cognitive Radio (CR)
newlineconcept has been proposed by Joseph Mitola. Cognitive Radio is a smart radio
newlinethat can sense the external electromagnetic environment and can adapt its
newlinetransmission parameters according to the current state of the environment.
newlineThis observation created new insight in spectrum allotment, called
newlineOpportunistic Spectrum Access (OSA). This has necessitated this new
newlinecommunication standard that allows unlicensed (secondary) users to utilize
newlinethe vacant bands which are allocated to licensed (primary) users.
