Hydrochemical investigation and assessment of groundwater quality using gis in tiruppur taluk tamil nadu india

Abstract

Groundwater is a valuable resource that many countries possess. diverse water needs in many sectors, including agricultural, industrial and residential, are growing quickly and groundwater is depleting on a daily basis, creating instable water table level and affecting the groundwater balance. the increased demand for water has led due to its over-usage. the present study has been undertaken to identify the groundwater vulnerable regions and suggest suitable remedial measures for tiruppur taluk. around 58 groundwater samples were collected from the pre-monsoon (prm) and post-monsoon (pom) periods of the year 2018. the groundwater quality showed ph, tds, k+, mg2+, hco3-, cl-, so42-, co32-, bod and cod were exceeding the allowable limits, both in the pre- and post-monsoon periods. the weighted index overlay analysis showed that 90 % and 80 % of the study area were not suitable for drinking, both in pre- and post-monsoon periods. the water quality index (wqi) of the groundwater sample (58 nos) showed that both in the pre- and post-monsoon periods, no samples were presented an excellent and good water quality for the study area. the type of water that pre-dominated the study area was cl--ca2+ and mixed ca2+-mg2+-cl- type during for both the pre- and post-monsoon periods of the year 2018. based on the hydro-chemical facies, the predominance of mixed ca2+-mg2+-cl- indicated that the major hydro-chemical process was due to industrial activities and weathering solubilisation. the estimated sar values for both prm and pom periods for the study area were ranges between 0 and 18.48; and 1.74 and 28.43, suggesting that 90% and 81% of samples during the prm and pom periods were appropriate for irrigation, respectively. a satisfactory irrigation quality was shown in the computed kelley s ratio (kr), percent sodium (na %), sodium newline newline newline
